Shane Black To Direct Adaptation Of The Manga Death Note

Deadline reports that Shane Black has been hired by Warner Bros. to direct the live action adaptation of the manga/anime Death Note.

Death Note is about a highschool student named Light Yagami who is tired of the growing crime and corruption around him. One day when discovering a mysterious notebook known as the “death note.” Legend has it that if you want to kill someone write their name on the note and they will die. At first doubting the legend he writes the names of gangsters he wants to see dead and they start dieing. Light decides to become God, deciding who lives and who dies while creating a new, peaceful world.

Death Note was created by writer Tsugumi Ohba and artist Takeshi Obata.

Shane Black has admited that he’s a fan of the original and says he plans to:

take [Death Note] back to that manga, and make it closer to what is so complex and truthful about the spirituality of the story, versus taking the concept and trying to copy it as an American thriller.

The plot sounds interesting. I’m not a fan of manga and anime but to the people who are, are you looking forward to this?
