Paramount Wants Star Trek 2 To Be In 3D

Yesterday we reported here that J.J. Abrams has not seen the script for Star Trek 2 and is still undecided on whether or not he will direct Star Trek 2. That hasn’t stopped Paramount from asking Abrams to shoot the sequel in 3D.

Abrams speaking to Vulture says:

I have nothing against 3-D in theory. But I’ve also never run to the movies because something’s in 3-D. As soon as I read the script, if it says, ‘Somebody pushes a weapon toward the camera in a menacing way,’ and we think, ‘That’d be better in 3-D!’… I dunno. What do you wanna see? 2-D or 3D?

The reporter said it didn’t matter to him, Abrams goes onto say:

I’m a big fan of whip pans, which is very hard to do in 3-D. You know, when I was in New York fifteen years ago, and I sort of had the flu, I remember turning the TV on. There were these kids in a very dark, kind of muddy movie that was on a local channel, talking about making out. Then you cut to them walking in the forest, and somebody had a paddleball, and they were doing it right to the camera. It was like this weird, experimental Fellini movie. I was like, “What the fuck is this movie?” And it was Friday the 13th Part 3 in 3-D — without sex, violence, or 3-D! It was genius.

This is exactly the problem I have with the studios and 3D. There is no director, Abrams has yet to even read the script and doesn’t know whether or not the script calls for the film to be in 3D but they want to go ahead and make it in 3D.

A movie should be made in 3D if it helps tell the story, not to make a few extra dollars for the studios. If the director feels that the story is best told in 3D then by all means go ahead and shoot Star Trek in 3D. The film should dictate 3D not the greed of studio executives.

Star Trek was great the first time around and it was in 2D. I don’t see why they need to make it in 3D if it doesn’t help with the enjoyment of the film. When the 3D is bad like in Clash Of The Titans it not only hurts the movie but future 3D films as well. Warner Bros. actually got it right last year with Harry Potter and The Deathly Hallows Part 1. They wanted to convert it to 3D, it would’ve ensured the film made even more money than it already has but they also wanted the film to look good and for audiences to enjoy it. The 3D was not ready so Warner’s decided to do the right thing and released it in 2D.

Luckily J.J. Abrams is a guy with a lot of power in Hollywood, if he feels Star Trek should not be in 3D then Paramount won’t be able to force him to make it in 3D.

What do you think? Would you like to see Star Trek in 3D? Should films be made in 3D to help the story or just because it’s the newest fad and makes more money?
