Roger Ebert Adds New Co-Host To At The Movies

Last fall Disney cancelled the long run movie review show At The Movies.  At The Movies was started by Roger Ebert and the late Gene Siskel in 1982.  Later this month Roger Ebert is bringing the series back.

Unfortunately due to complications from Thyroid cancer Roger Ebert can no longer speak but that has not stopped his love for reviewing movies.  Shortly after the cancelling of At The Movies Ebert announced that he was in talks to bring back the program.  That is now a reality.

Starting January 21 PBS will begin syndicating Roger Ebert presents At The Movies.  Ebert will be bringing back the Thumbs Up/Thumbs Down style of reviewing.  Ebert can no longer debate but he will have a segment on the show called “Rogers Office” in which he will review films and talk about the movie industry in general by the aid of a computer program that speaks for him.

Originally it was announced that Christy Lemire of the Associated Press and Elvis Mitchell of The New York Times would be sitting in the balcony, duking it out over movies but Mitchell was dropped from the show.

Filling in for Mitchell will be Ignatiy Vishnevetsky, a 24-year-old movie blogger who currently writes for Mubi.com as well as The Chicago Reader. Vishnevetsky also co-founded Cinefile.info.  Vishnevetsky was born in Russia and moved to the United States with his family when he was 9 years old. While hosting screenings in Chicago Ebert says:

I was struck by the depth and detail of his film knowledge, and by how articulate he was.

I think this is a great decision by Ebert.  He’s got a good, traditional film critic in Christie Lemire debating with a blogger.  It’s the old style of film journalism meeting the new, young way of talking about cinema.  Kudos to Ebert on taking this chance with his new show.
