Movies To Look Forward To In 2011

Out with the old, in with the new.  2010 has come to a close but there will be plenty of movies in 2011.

The Green Hornet:

The internet has been talking about this film for a long time.  It was announced in 2007 that Seth Rogen would not only star as The Green Hornet but would also be writing the film with his Superbad co-writer Evan Goldberg.  Rogen is also the executive producer.

The Green Hornet was originally supposed to come out last June as part of the Summer movie season but was then moved to December.  Unfortunately once again the film’s release date was moved, this time to January 14, 2011 in order to have more time to convert to 3-D.

At one time Hong Kong action star and director Stephen Chow was signed on to direct and play Kato but dropped out due to “creative differences.”  Chow was replaced with Michael Gondry directing and Jay Chou playing Kato.

With all this behind the scenes trouble and the decision to convert to 3-D I had my reservations but seeing the trailer and tv spots has me interested in this film.  Also Seth Rogen as a superhero sounds fun.

Release Date: January 14, 2011

The Company Men:

Originally scheduled to come out in December, it was pushed back due to a crowded market.  The film stars Ben Affleck, Tommy Lee Jones, Chris Cooper and Kevin Costner.  The subject matter is very timely as it deals with corporate downsizing in a weak economy.  The film had a lot of buzz last year at Sundance where there was Oscar talk.  It was also compared to Up In The Air.

Release Date: January 21, 2011

Biutiful:

Another film that was scheduled to open in 2010 but was pushed back to 2011.  The film stars Oscar winner Javier Bardem and is directed by the talented Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu who directed 21 Grams and Babel among others.

Bardem plays a man who’s trying to get redemption before it’s too late and his performance as well as the film has gotten great reviews.

Bardem is a great actor and I love Inarritu’s work, I was disappointed that it was not coming out last year but will be there later this month when it finally opens.

Release Date: January 28, 2011

Happythankyoumoreplease

Happythankyoumoreplease debuted last year at Sundance to great reviews. It has been making the festival circuit over the last year and has finally gotten a release date.  Like the other films on this list it was scheduled for a 2010 release.  It’s written and directed by Josh Randor who’s on the CBS hit How I Met Your Mother who also has an acting  role in the film.  Happythankyoumoreplease centers around the lives of 3 couples who are facing different romantic problems in New York City.  Malin Akerman, Kate Mara and Zoe Kazan.

Release Date: February 18, 2011

RANGO:

Johnny Depp stars in this animated film about a chameleon who has an identity crisis.  The movie also stars Isla Fisher and Timothy Olyphant.  It’s directed by Gore Verbiniski who directed the original Pirates Of The Caribbean trilogy.  Unlike other animated films the actors don’t just lend their voices, motion capture technology was used and the actors even dressed in wardrobe as they shot the film.

Release Date: March 4, 2011

Battle: Los Angeles

This is an alien invasion film but what makes this film different is that instead of a disaster film we have a war film.  The trailer looks interesting.  The film stars Michelle Rodriguez and Aaron Eckhart.

Release Date: March 11, 2011

Red State

Kevin Smith has been talking about Red State for years now.  Red State will premiere at The Sundance Film Festival this year.  The posters look great as does the teaser Smith released.  It’s a horror film directed by Kevin Smith, I’m all in.

Release Date: Kevin Smith is hoping for a March release

Source Code:

Source Code is director Duncan Jones’ follow up film after Moon.  Moon was one of my favorite films last year and the trailer for Source Code looks great. The film stars Jake Gyllenhaal and Michelle Monaghan.

Release Date: April 1, 2011

Super:

James Gunn directs Rainn Wilson and Ellen Page in this film about a comic book fan decides to become a superhero when his wife leaves him.  Ellen Page plays his sidekick.  It sounds a bit like Kick-Ass but that’s not a bad thing as Kick-Ass was a very good film.  I hear it is a lot more violent than Kick-Ass but there’s no 13-year-old girl uttering curse words  so it will be interesting to see how this performs.

Release Date: April 1, 2011

Your Highness:

James Franco, Natalie Portman, Danny McBride and Zoe Deschanel star in this medieval period piece comedy.  Your Highness is directed by David Gordon Green, the same person who directed Pineapple Express.  The cast itself sold me on the film before I saw the Red Ban and Green Ban trailers.  By the time this film is released it is very possible that will be calling James Franco and Natalie Portman Academy Award Winning actors.  Danny McBride is always hysterical and Zoe Deschanel never disappoints.

Release Date: April 8, 2011

Hanna:

Joe Wright, director of Pride and Predjudice and Atonement directs this film about a 14-year-old girl who becomes an assasian.  The trailer looks good and it stars Saoirse Ronan as the title character Hanna along with Cate Blanchett and Eric Bana.

Release Date: April 8, 2011

Scream 4

Ghost Face returns this year.  Wes Craven has returned to the franchise along with Neve Campbell, Courtney Cox and David Arquette.  The Scream films are some of the best films in the horror genre and when they first came out redefined the genre.

Release Date: April 15, 2011

Fast Five

The Fast And The Furious franchise is a fun, action packed series. The cars are fast and the women are beautiful.  There can be a plot but it’s still fun to watch.  Vin Diesel, Paul Walker, Jordanna Brewster are back from the last film. Tyrese Gibson will reprise his role from 2 Fast 2 Furious.  Also returning to the franchise is Chris “Ludacris” Bridge and Sung Kang.  Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson joins the cast as a bounty hunter searching for Vin Diesel’s character.

Release Date: April 29, 2011

Thor

Marvel continues to expand its film universe as the Norse God Thor gets his first film.  The trailer looks great and Marvel has done a great job since starting its own studio to release their comic book films.  I don’t expect Thor to disappoint.  Thor is directed by Kenneth Branagh and stars Chris Hemsworth as Thor and Anthony Hopkins as Oden.  Natalie Portman co-stars.

Release Date: May 6, 2011

Pirates Of The Caribbean: On Stranger Tides

The 4th installment of The Pirates franchise will be in 3-D! Johnny Depp returns as everyone’s favorite pirate Captain Jack Sparrow.  Orlando Bloom and Keira Knightly are not in this one but fear not, the beautiful Penelope Cruz along with the talented Ian McShane who plays Blackbeard have joined Johnny Depp and Geofrey Rush in their search for The Fountain of Youth.

Release Date: May 20, 2011

The Hangover Part 2

Their back and this time they’re reportedly going to Thiland.  Not much is known about the plot but The Hangover has had it’s fair of controversy as Mel Gibson was supposed to have a cameo but cast and crew members were not happy with that and he was promptly replaced.  There is a rumor a former President will have a cameo, good thing Heather Graham is not in this film.

Release Date: May 27, 2011

X-Men: First Class

A prequel to the original films, this film is directed by Matthew Vaughn and stars James McAvoy as a young Professor Charles Xavier and Michael Fassbender as a young Eric Lensherr aka Magneto.  X-Men First Class shows how Professor Xavier formed the X-Men and how the friendship between Xavier and Magneto ends.  Rumor has it Hugh Jackman makes a cameo as Wolverine.

Release Date: June 3, 2010

Super 8

J.J. Abrams direct this film and Stephen Spielberg produced it.  Not much more is known.  Elle Fanning stars in this film.

Release Date: June 10, 2010

Green Lantern:

Ryan Reynolds stars as Hal Jordan, the test fighter who is chosen to keep peace in the universe.  The trailer did not impress me at all, I’ve felt that Reynolds was wrong for the film but I am still looking forward to seeing a Green Lantern film.  All the artwork that has been released by WB does look good, so hopefully the trailer was just rushed and the CGI will be fixed.

Release Date: June 17, 2011

Rise Of The Apes

This is not the sequel for Tim Burton’s Planet Of The Apes.  It’s a prequel starring James Franco as a scientist looking to cure Alzheimer’s Disease and experiments on a chimp named Caesar.  Andy Serkis (gollum) Brian Cox and Frieda Pinto co-star.

Release Date: June 24, 2011

Transformers: Dark Of The Moon

I am one of the only people apparently that likes Revenge Of The Fallen so I’m really looking forward to this film.  The third and most likely final chapter of The Transformers franchise will not have Megan Fox in it.  Shia LaBeouf returns along with Optimus Prime to face off against Shockwave.

Release Date: July 1, 2011

Harry Potter And The Deathly Hallows: Part 2

The final chapter in the Harry Potter franchise comes to a close.  There is no reason to hype this film, after the first part there is no way it will disappoint.

July 15, 2011

Captain America: The First Avenger

One of the most iconic comic book heroes finally makes his debut on the silver screen.  Set in World War 2 will see Steve Rogers transformation into Captain America. I’m interested to see how Chris Evans of the Fantastic Four films plays Captain America.  It was interesting casting, hopefully he will do the role justice.

Release Date: July 22, 2011

Cowboys And Aliens:

Jon Favreau directs, James Bond and Han Solo star in this film.  Not enough? Olivia Wilde also co-stars in this film.  Daniel Craig and Harrison Ford have to put their differences aside when a space ship lands in the Wild West.

Release Date: July 29, 2011

Fright Night

The original is a favorite of mine but I’m looking forward to the remake even it’s being made to just capitalize on the vampire craze.  Collin Farrell as the evil vampire should be fun to watch.

Release Date: August 19, 2011

Drive

Drive features Ryan Gossling and Carey Mulligan.  Enough said.  It’s also about a stuntman who does heist on the side and has to run for his life.

Release Date: September 9, 2011

Now

Olivia Wilde stars in this film and Justin Timerblake plays her son in a world where the ageing process has stopped.  Cillian Muprhy and Amanda Seyfried costar in this science fiction film.

Release Date October 22, 2011

Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol

While I don’t understand why they needed to change the formula and give it a sub-title I’m still looking forward to the next Mission Impossible.  Tom Cruise returns as Ethan Hunt along with Jeremy Renner who is rumored to take over the franchise after this film.

Release Date: December 16, 2011

The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo

The remake of the Swedish film starring Daniel Craig and Rooney Mara one of the best films of 2010 is directed by David Fincer.  The producers and studio went through every young actress in Hollywood before deciding on offering the role to Rooney Mara.  She’s a relative unknown, it was a wise move.  Of course the original film being so good and beloved it will be hard to give this version a clean slate.  The original film was one of my favorites from last year and I’m looking forward in seeing how Fincer handles the adaptation of the novel, especially the violence.

Release Date: December 21, 2011

Well, it looks like there is a lot of really interesting and promising films coming out this year.  Of course there will be more I’m sure after this year’s Sundance Film Festival that will come out later in the year.

Did I miss a movie that you’re looking forward to?  It’s your turn to tell us what you’re looking forward to seeing in 2011.
